One fifth of UK households are rented privately and the costs of privately rented properties can vary greatly. In order to help you get to grips with renting (if you have little prior experience), we’ve outlined some of our top tips below that can point you in the proper direction.
In both England and Wales, over a third of private renters are unaware of what’s known as the tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme, or if their deposits are even safeguarded. As stated by law, if you possess an assured shortlist tenancy (AST) which began on or after 6th April 2007, your landlord is required to place your deposit into an appropriate scheme within 30 days of receiving it. Should a landlord fail to defend your deposit, you will be able to escalate the matter to a small claims court to get it back.
If your deposit happens to be in one of these schemes, you are entitled to the full deposit sum once the tenancy has ended – as long as you’ve met all the necessary terms. Those who come to an agreement with the landlord in regards to how much money they’re due shall have it returned to them within ten days following the end date of the tenancy.
